They are ready to invest fully constructed portfolios based on various key parameters:

returns = historical and future expectations

risk capacity = financial ability and flexibility: income security, reserves, withdrawal needs e.g. incoming big events like buying a house or retiring

risk tolerance = emotional resilience: a subjective behavioral trait as reactions during past market crashes and especially, the likely reaction in the future

investment horizon: medium to long-term approaches

liquidity needs: short to medium term variables predominantly

costs and fees: to invest and gain access to e.g. broker, products, portfolio

taxes: tax aware investing as after-tax returns are key for compounding wealth

Naturally, there are trade-offs which have to be properly understood and accepted, while in the same time, we can do various optimisations for the various trade-offs.

This post covers Portfolio Management 101, a walkthrough of the performance of various asset classes via 12 Maverick Charts for 10,000 Words! If I had been born 150 years ago and went to the dentist, they'd pour whiskey down me [instead of local anesthetic]. There are just all kinds of improvements!"

2) Investing is always a forward looking activity

history is the greatest teacher, and also an underrated investing advantages

yet while the past is representative, hence valuable, investing has to be always done with a forward looking lens (otherwise, better to become a pure historian)

3) Recent Economy = Recent Returns = More Representative Going Forward

looking at the more recent modern economy and related financial returns of various asset classes, is a better representation for our outlook going forward

Therefore, check $1,000 invested in Stocks, Treasuries, TIPS, Commodities +

👉 Peaceful times: post WWII 1939-1945 with way more peaceful times onwards

👉 Gold Standard: in 1971 U.S. President Richard Nixon ended the gold standard, hence shifting the global economy to a fiat currency system

👉 Bretton Woods: 1971–1973 system fallout meant the end of fixed exchange rates which allowed capital to move across borders with far fewer restrictions

👉 Microprocessor: 1971 invention meant we switched into the Information Age which drove unprecedented productivity growth, and gave rise to entirely new industries — as microprocessors grew exponentially more powerful (following Moore’s Law) their economic implications triggered a positive structural revolution

👉 Oil Crisis: 1973 supply shock triggered a sharp recession combined with high inflation, hence a nasty stagflation — it forced Western economies to restructure, accelerating the shift toward deregulated financial markets and international lending

👉 Hyper-Globalization: mid-1970s marked the transition into a significantly deeper phase of globalisation, often called hyper-globalization or modern globalization:

Deep integration: production becomes fragmented across global value chains with components made anywhere, hence driving down costs

Free Trade Agreements: 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the economic opening of China and the Soviet bloc

👉 The Great Moderation: mid-1980s start of a period when U.S. macroeconomic volatility sharply plummeted as we got better at managing the business cycle

👉 Returns data quality: compared to 1925, the last decades carry way more cleaner data quality measuring the returns and key stats for various asset classes — recall that the current official format of the S&P 500 index dates back to 1957, while in general for all asset classes, data quality is less good the more we go back in time (previous other formats, reconstructed, backfilling etc)

Overall, the recent modern economy since 1970 is more representative for both nowadays & going forward, and so are the financial returns from various asset classes.

📊 U.S. Recessions, Stocks Bear Markets and Drawdowns since 1970 📊

How many recessions since 1970?

👉 7 occurrences

What was the duration on average?

👉 10.6 months (74 total months divided by 7), hence less than a year = very good!

What were the top 3 longest recessions?

👉 16 months Nov 1973 – Mar 1975

👉 16 months Jul 1981 – Nov 1982

👉 18 months Dec 2007 – Jun 2009 = the big one = the GFC/Lehman!

Below the chart where I added extra the Recessions = shaded grey areas:
<div and how they behave across the many recessions and bear markets.

Yet, there is more out there that I look into and focus:

👉 U.S. and International small and mid caps — Swiss ones especially

👉 U.S. and International Real Estate (REITs)

👉 U.S. and International corporate and municipal bonds — HY and IG

👉 Private Equity via public vehicles in order to access very high barriers to entry: real assets like infrastructure & digitalization real assets, renewable power & energy transition, real estate & credit — with a long-term, buy-and-operate investing strategy

And then, among others, we have various investment styles and strategies:

👉 factor investing: both classic and style premia / alternative risk premia

👉 trend-following, managed futures

👉 market neutral, long-short

👉 value, growth, quality, momentum

👉 tail-risk hedging: crisis alpha

All right, so what is "Maverick’s mission“ here?

The mission is taking all of the above and construct with them portfolios that:

weather all the economic & financial markets storms presented initially above +

generate returns and compound over time + in the same time

experience lower drawdowns, lower stress, hence good sleep

In essence, it is about constructing solid and optimized portfolios:

Higher returns and/or lower risks — very good risk-adjusted returns

Diversification, I mean Real Diversification because diversification is the only free lunch in investing we’ll ever get — more on that in future dedicated research

“Why are you bringing now these portfolios, Mav?“

Simple 2 big reasons, Execution and years ago

without an expensive ‘prime broker’ for market access

without the related high transaction costs

without high management fees (% AUM model) and/or without high retainer fees

add on top of the above, also tax efficient

In essence, we have never had it better in terms of investing than we do now!

I will have the required time, focus, energy & resources (tech, tools & data costs) to invest in, hence dedicate to this big project —
